Day 6: The Mallorca Files and Sóller

This morning we took a 1912 antique train out to the town of Sóller. It's about an hour north of Palma on the north coast. You go through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains to get there.  How did we find out about Sóller? Well, last winter Steve started watching this cheesy British cop show called The Mallorca Files. It's not a great show, but has amazing cinematography of Mallorca. He got me to start watching it, and it's what gave us the impetus to come to Mallorca.

The train ride to and from Sóller is beautiful.

The train station has a number of works by Miró and Picasso.

We wandered from the station into the town and immediately encountered its main church. Its architect was Joan Rubió, a disciple of Gaudí. This town really has a modernist feel.

As we walked through town we came upon the Ca Prunera Museum. It is chocked full of art from Pere Serra, a businessman and collector.  Joan Rubió was also the architect here.

Here is a painting by Juli Ramis who was born in Sóller. The museum has three rooms of his work.

Serra collected art from all over the world. Here's one by Canadian artist Jean-Paul Riopelle.

And surprise, surprise--there were three rooms of work by Miró.

We then took about a 20 minute tram ride down to Port de Sóller. It's beautiful seaside town.

Steve wanted to eat lunch at one of the restaurants that was on The Mallorca Files, so we hiked a half mile practically straight up hill (no kidding) and had a marvelous meal overlooking a quiet bay just around the corner from Port de Sóller.

A long, but really fun day.
