Day 13: Museu National d'Art de Catalunya

I begin each morning with this beautiful cappuccino. What a way to start the day!!

Today we spent the day at the Museu National d'Art de Catalunya. It is housed in the National Palace that was built in 1929 for an International Exhibition. It's a stunning building with wonderful treasures inside.

One of the main reasons I wanted to see this museum was because of all of the rescued 11th and 12th century murals that were once in small churches in the Pyrenees. As the churches became abandoned, people took parts of the murals off the wall (not sure how) and sold them. Between 1919 and 1923 the museum people removed the murals from the walls of the churches and transferred them to walls in the museum. This is a very complicated 12 step process--quite amazing.

The piece below was crafted in the year 1295. I was pretty shocked because there was such a modern look to the piece.

The museum collection is huge--Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque. They also have a modern art section. Here is a piece from the Spanish Civil War and a bust of Don Quixote.

There were tons of rooms of modernist furniture. These pieces were made by Gaudi.

And no Spanish museum would be complete without a Picasso.

Another lovely day.
