Day 23 & 24: Seville to Malaga & Picasso

Yesterday we took the train from Seville to Malaga. This was our first train ride on this trip. I forgot how comfortable train travel can be. Practically the whole way we saw scenes like this--olive trees as far as the eye can see. Fun fact: Spain produces 45% of the world's olive oil and 20% of all table olives.

We were deciding whether to stay in a charming old hotel in the middle of old town or a modern one with great views and a big balcony. We chose the latter and made a good choice. We step out of our hotel into old town and still have this stunning view from our room.

Malaga is jumping at night. It has a very lively street culture.

We woke up to find this ferry that sails to North Africa docked right in front of our room.

We then walked about 5 minutes from our hotel to get to the Picasso Museum. We passed this church which is right next to our hotel.

This small museum is great. It makes sense since Picasso was born her. It has a number of paintings that Picasso had kept for himself or those belonging to family members. I saw work of his I'd never seen before. Here's a sampling.

There were two other exhibits at the museum. Oscar Dominguez was a Spanish surrealist whom I had never encountered. They had a huge number of his paintings in the exhibit. Here are a couple. The first reminded me of Dali. The second was a self portrait with bull. I really loved his work.

The other exhibit showed the giant canvas works of Farah Atassi, a Belgium artist who was new to me. She references a number of modern artists in her paintings.

What a wonderful, artful day! We walked a different way back to our hotel and went by the Roman Amphitheater with the Arab Palace on top of the hill. Again, steps from our hotel.

And when we got back to our room, the ferry from the morning was taking off.

There is a lot more to Malaga than I had imagined. Love the place so far.
